The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis was started in 1985 by Barth A. Green, M.D. and Marc Buoniconti as a spinal cord injury research institute (Kalpan et al, 2010). Marc Buoniconti, the youngest son of former Miami Dolphins co-captain and Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Nick Buoniconti, was injured in a football game at the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, on October 26, 1985, when he was 19 years old. Quadriplegia, or paralysis from the neck down, resulted from this spinal cord injury (SCI) (Kalpan et al, 2010).
